About my ratings

Perhaps because of my day job, I'm a tough rater. Everything 3/5 and above I consider worth the time and money. If I purchase on Etsy or a similar platform and the puzzle is as expected, I will give a top rating on the platform because of how seller ratings work, but here "as expected" is probably a 3/5 in most cases.

Chaos Fire Bird

GoAnywhere, 125 pieces. Not a standout, but a cute mini puzzle was included! 3/5

Strawberry

GoAnywhere, 136 pieces. When you're trying lots of things, some of them may not work as well--I found this puzzle too fiddly even for my tastes--lots of false edges or at least pieces with connectors only on three sides. I also noticed that the back of the GoAnywhere boxes say that most of their puzzles had whimsies, but I'm not sure the majority of the ones I've done have had them. 3/5

Celtic Knot

GoAnywhere, 160 pieces. I have never been sadder that a laser-cut puzzle company disappeared. There are a large number of perfectly reasonable wooden puzzlers who would hate this puzzle; I thought it was genius, basically a laser-cut five exclamation point Tormentor. (Warning: the image on the box provides far more visual clues than the actual image on the puzzle.) Most laser cutters would struggle with a puzzle with this many dropouts, because they'd have trouble getting the connectors distinguishable enough to really tell you when you'd gotten it right. That wasn't a problem here, despite the small piece size. For added difficulty and frustration, there are a bunch of fake/border knobs, not symmetrically placed. GoAnywhere also had a huge range of technical innovation. I wish we could have seen what they'd have done with modern thicker wood. 5/5

The intersection here is really hard to identify in the individual pieces, but obvious once assembled

Carlile Cathedral

GoAnywhere, approx. 150 pieces. I wish there were more of these on the market, especially the ones with images-within-images (this is not one of those). Tiny pieces, relatively muted image here. 3/5

Exeter Village

GoAnywhere, 180 pieces.  I'm actually a bit surprised more laser cutters haven't done this--the puzzle-in-a-puzzle idea that involves pieces that fit in two different places for purposes of the main puzzle and a mini-puzzle. This one involved an outline created by negative space within a fame of pieces rather than a solid figure, which is probably easier to create but confused me until I figured out they were serious about it being an outline.  Anyway, it ramped up the challenge by a lot.  I hope someone has a bunch of these in a garage somewhere and puts them on the market--they're quite distinctive and challenging despite their small size.  3/5

Grand Canyon of the Colorado

GoAnywhere, 180 pieces.  Tiny pieces with some good hidden connectors.  3/5

Asparagus Island

GoAnywhere, 154 pieces.  Another small laser-cut puzzle, this time without a puzzle-in-puzzle feature.  Some nice cutting to produce spaces for connectors that are not obvious until two other pieces are put together.  3/5

Shoshone Falls, Idaho, Thomas Moran, 1873

GoAnywhere, 170 pieces. New cutter to me, though seems to be out of business, sadly.  The puzzle arrived in a repurposed VCR case (previously unused, but clearly manufactured as a VCR case)--I guess there had to be lots of people stuck with those when the VCR stopped being a common playback device.  Whimsies are a bit like Wentworth's, with some extra inscribed detail visible on the back side.  This is laser cutting that uses the affordances of laser cutting in an interesting way: there's a mini puzzle inside the puzzle, and you get the outline and the number of pieces and have to figure it out without any help from the picture. The pieces also fit in the regular way with the picture, so sometimes I found a connection but had to reject it because the picture matched!  Very interesting and a nice variation.  3/5
